Art is to change what you expect from it

A unique opportunity to purchase a complete set of this important archival document direct from the original source: 156 issues in 50 complete sets, boxed in a specially constructed acid-free box (320 x 460 x 60 mm) and released by Adriann van Ravesteijn and Geert van Beijeren, the founders of Art & Project in Holland who issued the bulletin over a period of 21 years.

From the earliest days in 1968 when the bulletin appeared Under the title of « Architectural Research » the Small statement printed on the bottom of the front page rings out with the spirit of its time : "Art & Project plans to bring you together with the ideas of artists, architects and technicians to discover an intelligent form for your living and working space. Art & Project invites you to participate in its exhibitions which will explore ways in which art,architecture and technology can combine with you own ideas".

This statement was to prove prophetic. The bulletin became well-known and as the gallery in Amsterdam grew,it attracted artists all over the world who wanted to contribute to or use the bulletin to explore their own work. It appealed to artists in the Conceptual Art movement to whom the bulletin was a way of conveying art ideas from the artists to the viewer/reader at a low cost: it did not have a value except for the ideas it contained ; bulletins were mailed free to an international mailing list or distributed from the gallery to visitors. The bulletins contained original material in a sequence which is determined by the arttist, but the viewer/reader can read the material in any order but the artist présents it as s/he thinks it should be. As Lawrence Weiner, who made five bulletins states "THEY (BOOKS) ARE PERHAPS THE LAST IMPOSITIONAL MEANS OF TRANSFERRING INFORMATION FROM ONE TO ANOTHER".

The importance of the bulletins as an archival source on the period is unrivaled, both through the quality of the original pageworks and the calibre of the artists involved all the key artists from this period contributed one and often more bulletins : Robert Barry made four, Stanley Brown made seven, Jan Dibbets six, Hamish Fulton three, Gilbert & George four, Douglas Huebler four, Sol Lewitt five, Richard Long seven, and Allen Ruppersberg two.

From Daniel Buren’s transparent bulletin to Sol Lewitt’s beautiful bulletin folded into 48 small squares, from Bas Jan Ader’s final bulletin mailed during his last work in which he died to Gilbert & George’s fragile double portrait,thèse issues are a unique moving international artwork that stands apart from anything else in this period in its breath of artists included and quality of original work involved. It is increasingly included in exhibitions concerned with Conceptual Art and its influences.The complete set is of prime interest to major private collectors and muséums and libraries concerned with the artists involved with the bulletins. These 156 issues encapsulate an era.

In response to increasing interest, Art & Project have decided to release from their own stock of original bulletins 50 strictely limited sets – no further sets will be issued. To achieve this aim and to complete these 50 sets only, each set will contain 7 reprints (clearly marked) and 149 original bulletins. The production of the reprints has been overseen by Adriaan van Ravesteijn (who produced the original bulletins) working with the original printer, thus the reprints are of identical quality to the originals. Each set will also include a new complete full inventory of all the bulletins prepared by Art & Project.

In a giant incomprehensible flow chart (a form borrowed from Beuys’s blackboard works), he maps out the ‘six degrees of separation’ of his art heroes, linking them impossibly to each other, and inevitably back to Beuys. It requires the complicated linear thinking of a late-night drinking game, but Davies proves it’s only twelve easy jumps from Picasso to Sarah Lucas (if Peter Doig and Matthew Barney’s love of sport can be counted as an actual link). Peter Davies presents an art history on a functional level: it’s about as close to science as it gets.

Peter Davies' colourful lists inspired by conceptualism's dry text works rank modern and contemporary artists according to his opinions, these text based paintings explore the role of the artist in defining popular culture while combining certain art historical and contemporary art notions with everyday life or culture. The intentionally anti-aesthetic lists take something which is understood, accepted or acknowledged and while adhering to those givens, something from the contemporary world is thrown in to skew it.

Davies' text works seem far removed from the the traditional notion of how conceptual, text based art should appear. His wordy arrangements arrangements explain how things stand in a particular system without recourse to a traditional forms of representation. As works of art they are homorously reflexive, dwelling upon the artistic context that they are part of.

As in The Fun One Hundred Davies says "The text paintings offer a playful and humorous take on my attempt to understand art history and contemporary art". Davies' lists offers explanations as to why these artists are 'fun', such as 'David Hockney - Pool Attendant' and 'Vanessa Beecroft - Hanging Out'.(via http://www.opus-art.com/artists/PeterDavies)

Tania Mouraud was born in 1942 in Paris, France, where she continues to live with her family. Mouraud studied languages prior to her initial foray into the artworld as a painter in 1963. Since 1976, she has taught art at L'Ecole Regionale d'Expression Plastique, Tourcoing, France. During the past three decades, Mouraud has shown in numerous exhibitions throughout Europe and the United States. Her solo exhibitions have included: Tania Mouraud: Wall Painting (UCLA Hammer Museum, 1999), World Signs (Riverside Studios, London, 1998), Black Power (Galerie de Lege Ruimte, Bruges, 1989), Garden Shooting (Galerie Contretype, Bruxelles, 1987), City Performance No. 2 (60 posters, Lyon, 1980), and Art Space No. 5 (Special project, PSI, New York1977). * In 1990 trams in Amsterdam were covered with large AIDS silkscreen stickers of General Idea. The 'Amsterdam Tram Project' became quite controversial, i.e. conductors refused to drive their trams covered with the colourful and marked stickers afraid of giving their support to or at least being compromised and associated with homosexuality.

In the mid-1980's, the Canadian art group General Idea - AA Bronson, Felix Partz, and Jorge Zontal - created a symbol using the acronym AIDS, using the letters in a manner that resembled Robert Indiana's LOVE logo. This became part of Imagevirus, a project of paintings, sculptures, videos, posters, wallpapers and exhibitions that investigated the term AIDS as both word and image, using the mechanism of viral transmission. Imagevirus spread like a visual virus, producing an image epidemic in urban spaces from Manhattan to Sydney. It was displayed as, among other things, a Spectacolor sign in Times Square, a sculpture on a street in Hamburg, and a poster in the New York subway system. General Idea felt compelled to make Imagevirus at a time when AIDS was emerging as a global epidemic affecting gay men disproportionately.

Museum Fodor Amsterdam issued the posters in a signed and numbered edition.

Escaped Animals is a series of thirteen manufactured road signs depicting animals. Each sign was produced in an edition of four plus one artist’s proof. Opie created symbols for a fox, a hedgehog, a deer, a pheasant, a goose, a cat, a sheep, a squirrel, a cow, a goat, a chicken and a dog and placed them within a circle, rectangle or triangle, depending on the animal’s form and the visual appeal of the combination. The animals are depicted as simplified outlines against a coloured ground. Some – the fox, goose, squirrel and goat - are merely outlines, their bodies the same colour as the background. Others – the deer, cat and dog - are outlined in one colour and filled in another colour. The remainder – hedgehog, rabbit, pheasant, cat, sheep and chicken - are entirely another colour. Further variation is provided by the use of coloured margins around the edge of the sign. The signs consist of two geometric sheets of aluminium covered with vinyl overlays depicting the animals. These are attached in parallel on either side of a pole which is set into the ground in a metal sleeve. The image depicted is identical on either side of the sign. Installed, they stand at varying heights in a cluster of a minimum of three (as specified by the artist). To date, most have been installed outside, although the artist has designed circular metal bases for indoor installation. (from the Tate Collection)

For the new library designed by architects Penoyre and Prasard, Gordon has created a ‘forest’ of oak columns which are sited throughout the library and installed from floor to ceiling like supporting pillars. Workshops with users of the library were held by artist Anna Sandberg to gather information on people’s favourite books, places and memories. Using this generated content, Gordon worked with typographers Why Not Associates to design the columns. Each of the 14 solid oak columns reflect different subjects from the gothic to the romantic and are sited in specific relevant locations within the library.

“When working on this sequence I kept three notions in mind. Make it original, simple and distinctive enough. I believed simple content would be the answer to a finely tuned piece of work. Hence, the sequence abounds in this somewhat old-fashioned vintage style “brand identity” approach with a titled logotype centrally set in a 3d background movement.
I knew the film would be humorously philosophical. So I thought it was perfectly natural to create some kind of a retro feel to reflect some of the older classic films, but also keep it feeling fresh and contemporary at a time. Understanding where the film sat in its surrounding was absolutely vital. Although it is a short piece the level of difficulty was naturally quite high. Timing being one of the main reasons. Many creatives will tell you short pieces are the most difficult ones because you need to ensure that you make the most of every single second especially graphically and visually.”

A exposição Além da Biblioteca reúne obras que encontram sua configuração ideal no livro, evidenciando dois aspectos deste objeto: sua forma e seu conteúdo funcional.

Os trabalhos apresentados levantam especificidades formais do livro, que não deve ser visto como mero objeto, e sim como uma sequência de espaços, na definição de Ulises Carrión. As obras aqui expostas exploram a espacialidade do livro com a naturalidade de quem pertence ao universo criado por esse objeto, que é ao mesmo tempo mundano e enigmático.

Ao mesmo tempo que suporte e forma, o livro está presente nessas obras também com suas diferentes funções dentro do nosso cotidiano, afinal, este é o objeto usado pelas idéias como meio e veículo. Além da Biblioteca apresenta o atlas geográfico, o álbum de figurinhas, o dicionário, a enciclopédia, o romance, o caderno de desenho, o caderno de partitura, o livro de poesia, o flip-chart, e por aí vai.

Ao lançar um olhar sobre obras de arte que são livros, Além da Biblioteca disponibiliza ao público um recorte significativo da produção de arte contemporânea, respeitando as necessidades expositivas peculiares do livro de artista.

Je ne parle pas un mot de français. Michaux pas un mot de chinois. On se comprend très bien. Notre langage commun, c’était la peinture.
l’art de Michaux, même quand il est peint, est un art de l’Ecrit. D’où cette fascination pour l’encre qui symbolise à elle seule le point de rencontre entre écriture et peinture. D’où cet intérêt constant pour la calligraphie chinoise où un caractère est à lui seul poème et dessin.

J’admirais beaucoup, de mon côté, le graphisme de Michaux, la liberté de son trait, l’originalité de ses idéogrammes occidentaux, coupés de toute signification sémantique. Son art est lié à une certaine façon d’écrire, à l’invention d’un vocabulaire de signes qui n’appartiennent qu’à lui.

Eu não falo uma palavra de francês. Michaux não fala uma palavra de chinês. Nos compreendemos muito bem. Nossa linguagem comum é a pintura.
A arte de Michaux, mesmo quando ele pinta, é uma arte da escrita. De onde vem esta fascinação pela tinta que simboliza por si mesma o ponto de encontro entre a escritura e a pintura. De onde seu interesse pela caligrafia chinesa onde um caractere é ao mesmo tempo poema e desenho.
Eu admiro muito, de minha parte, o grafismo de Michaux, a liberdade de seu traço, a originalidade de seus ideogramas ocidentais, livres de toda significação semântica. Sua arte é ligada a uma certa maneira de escrever, à invenção de um vocabulário de signos que não pertencem a mais ninguém a não ser a ele.

The Jennifer Tee EVOL EYE LAND-S END book is made in the summer of 2004 as part of Tee’s contribution to the São Paulo Bienial, and is the result of an extensive collaboration between Jennifer Tee and graphic designer Richard Niessen. It is selected as one of the best Dutch book designs of 2004, and is for sale at galerie Fons Welters. The book consists of 8 booklets that are randomly bound. Each booklet has its own design, using one of the 4 typefaces that Niessen specially made for this project. One of the booklets contains an enormous panorama of Jennifer Tee’s work, in combination with the 4 typefaces. One of the typefaces was later developed into the Eye-vi font

The Xeroxed Book

The Xeroxed Book is based on Carl Andre, Robert Barry, Douglas Huebler, Joseph Kosuth, Sol LeWitt, Robert Morris, Lawrence Weiner - an artists book published by Seth Siegelaub and John Wendler in 1969 that is more commonly known as The Xerox Book. The Xerox Book was conceived as an exhibition in book form: Siegelaub invited the seven titular artists to submit 25-page projects designed to be reproduced by the then-new technology of the photocopy. However, photocopying proved too expensive at the time, and the book was printed on a traditional offset press.
The Xeroxed Book is a photocopied edition of the Xerox Book. Being photocopied, The Xeroxed Book is perhaps closer to Siegelaub's intent than the original book. However, as a second-generation copy, The Xeroxed Book displays the limitations of photocopying as a reproductive technology. Dust, page edges, distortions, and other familiar Xerox artifacts appear on every page, becoming as much a part of the reading experience as the original artists' projects.
